We got goats to clear brush, weeds, and vines from the undergrowth of our pine forests and what a great job they have done! We now have bermuda grass where once weeds only grew. Goats are now an intragal part of our herd management program. They graze the high vegitation and make room for more grass. They prefer weeds over grass for the high mineral content and the woody shrubs for the roughage that their rumens prefer.Running goats on our property has lessoned the amount of fertilizer. We use natural chicken manure on our pastures instead of chemical fertilizers. You get the dual benefit of nitrogen content plus the organic matter.
Our stratgy has always been, whether for our goats our our cows, is to get the best females you can, then put your money on an outstanding sire. He makes up half the herd, therefor drastically able to improve every kid born on the farm.
We just sold our amazing buck, CBF CHILI. Thank You W.J. and Kathy Stephenson. We look foward to the purchase of a new buck, as we had kept many of his daughters and need a new bloodline improve our herd further. We also kept a son of Chili, his picture posted below at 4 months old. We hope he turns out as nice as we think he is, and if so will use him on unrelated does, and later, line breed on some of our Chili granddaughters. We are anticipating some awsome kids!We are considering a buck out the Tarzan bloodline for our replacement buck, however we are taking our time, as our does will be weaning off the end of June, and we won't need a buck until late September.
We sought after large, long, thick does with excellent udders and maternal intincts. Then adding an amazing buck we have now a really nice set of young does coming on. We wanted quaility rather than quanitity. The results are in and we are pleased. We are looking foward to now breeding our Chili daughters.
